The Addon Domains feature in cPanel is a powerful tool that allows you to host multiple domains under a single hosting account. Here's a detailed breakdown of how it works and its benefits:
An Addon Domain is essentially a separate website with its own content hosted within the same cPanel account. Unlike subdomains or parked domains, addon domains are treated as independent websites.
Addon domains are stored in subdirectories within your home directory. For example, if your primary domain is example.com and you add newdomain.com as an addon domain, its files might be stored in /home/user/public_html/newdomain.com/ or even /home/user/newdomain.com/ which would be above the web root of the primary domain keeping it out of the primary domain's directory hierarchy. Visitors to the addon domain are routed to the newly created directory making it function as a standalone website.
Website and email migrations can be straightforward or a bit tricky depending on the platform. If you’re moving from cPanel to cPanel, you’re in luck—it’s the simplest option. With cPanel’s backup and restore features, you can quickly package your entire website, including files, databases, emails, and settings, into a single backup file. This file can then be restored onto a new cPanel server with minimal hassle and downtime.
For migrations from non-cPanel environments, a backup and restore is still possible, but it requires extra care. While many platforms allow you to export files and databases, third-party web builders may not always provide export functionality, making migration difficult or even impossible. In such cases, recreating the site manually might be the only option.
When it comes to email accounts, cPanel migrations include everything, accounts, settings and data. However, moving from a non-cPanel setup will require a manual email sync. This involves configuring your email accounts and transferring data manually to maintain consistency. You can read more about email sync here.
