Transfer Your Domain to Green Web Hosting

If you're unsure about how to transfer your domain or have any questions then please do get in touch with one of our team and we'll be happy to help.

Every website needs a good domain name, do you already have a unique domain with another service provider? You can move it to us by following the steps outlined below. Most domain providers use the same steps; there are a few that charge to transfer away and whilst that is outrageous, it does happen so please do check with your current registrar. You don’t need to worry if your domain names aren’t ready for renewal, you won’t lose any time you’ve already paid for.

Transfer In TLDs
(eg non UK domains)

First step in TLD domain transfer process
Step 01
Transfer Preparation

Sometimes domain transfers fail so the following steps are required to make sure the domain is available to transfer

  • Make sure the domain hasn't been registered or renewed in the last 60 days. The registry locks the domains for this period.
  • Make sure you have access to the admin email address (the email used to register the domain) to respond to the transfer approval requests.
Second step in TLD domain transfer process
Step 02
Required Action

You'll need information from your current registrar. This will normally be available in your domain management area but you may need to request it.

  • Unlock the domain at the current registrar from the domain management area. Usually under transfer away > unlock domain for transfer.
  • From the domain management area find the domain authorisation code (EPP). You'll need this unique identifier to approve the transfer.
Second to last step in TLD domain transfer process
Step 03
Start The Transfer In

Once you have the auth code and have unlocked the domain you can start the transfer in process using the auth code you retrieved in the previous step.

  • Domain Name: Enter the domain name to be transferred into the domain box eg: yourdomainname.com
  • Authorisation Code: Enter the unique authorisation code (EPP) so the registry knows this is a legitimate request
Final step of TLD domain transfer process
Step 04
Checkout and wait for the approval emails

For TLDs the registry require a payment in advance. You'll pay a "transfer fee" but this is basically a payment to renew the domain for another 12 months once it arrives at the new registrar.

  • A short time after checkout you'll receive an approval email from your current registrar asking if you're happy to proceed. Choose yes or no; if yes, the transfer should complete within the next 7 days (usually sooner)
  • Once complete, you'll receive an email to say your domain has successfully transferred. Check your account and make sure the domain has 12 months added to the registration period.

Transfer In UK Domains

Quick & Easy

Not a lot to say about UK transfers other than they are super quick because they complete in real-time. There is no fee to pay; the UK registry don't charge for transfers in or out. It's a two step process and these steps are as follows

  • Access your UK domain at the current registrar. Look for the transfer away option. You'll be asked to enter an IPS TAG, simply use our TAG "WHG" (without quotes).
  • Once the TAG has changed you then just need to start the transfer in so that we know to whom the domain should be assigned.

Interesting Fact

All UK registrants have an account at Nominet, the UK registry. If you ever get stuck or if your registrar is being difficult then you can log directly into the Nominet website portal to access your domain. All you'll need is to have access to the email address used to regsiter the domain and you can use the interface here to request a password https://secure.nominet.org.uk/auth/access-your-account.html. If you can't remember the email address or if you no longer have access then you can use the Re-establish Identity option which does cost £12.00 but at least you'll have access to your domain name once verified https://secure.nominet.org.uk/flows/reestablish-identity.html.

Our most popular extensions

It's important to note that whilst we try to give the best price possible, we can't always beat other registrars in pricing of TLDs. The number of domains held by the big registrars is ridiculously high and as such they are given bigger discounts which in turn enables them to give cheaper pricing.

Domain Name FAQ’s

Here we'll list some of the most frequently asked questions about domain names.

A domain name is the unique web address people type into their browser to visit your website (e.g., www.yourwebsite.com). Think of it as your website’s digital address that makes it easy for visitors to find you online.

Pick a name that’s short, memorable, and relevant to your brand or business. Avoid hyphens or numbers if possible, as they can make it harder for people to remember.

Domain registration is typically instant! As soon as you complete the process, the domain is yours to use.

Yes of course! If you already own a domain but want to switch providers, you can transfer it. We make the process seamless and hassle-free. Plus, there are no extra charges when transferring your UK domain to or away from us. There may be a charge for a TLD such as .com but you'll get 12 months added to the end of the current registration period whether you transfer in or out. To clarify, the receiving registrar will charge the "transfer fee" and add the 12 months once complete.

Domains are registered on a yearly basis. Renewing ensures you keep ownership of the name and that your website stays live.

In theory as many as you want. The packages we offer have a limit to the number of domains that you can add but we can tailor a package specifically for customers who need to host a large number of domains.

Absolutely! Without it, your personal details like name, address, and email could be listed in the public WHOIS database. We provide domain privacy protection for free, ensuring your information stays safe.

Don’t worry, you’ll typically get a grace period to renew your domain. However, if it’s not renewed within that time, it could become available for someone else to register.

You can always register a new domain, but keep in mind that switching domains can affect your branding and search engine rankings. It’s best to choose wisely from the start!
